Since the age of 18 he had been engaged in the national liberation struggle; in 1968 he covertly joined the United National Party (UNP).
Since 1973, he was a member of the UNP Board. Being a principled follower of Garegin Nzhdeh's ideas, and a staunch supporter of Hai Dat, seeing the future of the Armenian people in the creation and strengthening of an independent democratic state, he dedicated his whole conscious life to the struggle against the totalitarian Soviet system, for the free, independent and united Armenia.

For these activities, since 1969, Soviet authorities had convicted him three times to imprisonment, and he spent about 12 years in jail.
In 1987, back from jail, he continued the political struggle and from the first days of the liberation movement in 1988, he was in the epicenter of events.

In 1989, he established and headed a military and political organization, "Independence Army", which participated in the defense of Armenia's borders and in the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh, from Yeraskhavan to Mardakert, Kelbajar, Lachin, Shushi, etc.
In 1990, with a group of followers, based on the "Independence Army", he created the Republican Party of Armenia, which he chaired to his last day.

In 1990, he was elected to the RA Supreme Soviet as a deputy, and took efficient part in the legislative activities of the Supreme Soviet. He was a member of the parliamentary commission for Independent Statehood and National Policy, and the Constitutional commission.
Since 1995, he was a member of the National Assembly and vice-chairman of the Commission for Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs.

In 1996, in Germany he participated in the courses held at Marshall Strategic Studies Center and was awarded the title of a strategist. Prominent politician, Ashot Navasardian died suddenly on November 3, 1997.
