Henri Verneuil, was a prominent French-Armenian playwright and filmmaker, who enjoyed a successful career in France.
Director Henri Verneuil was born Achod (Ashod) Malakian to Armenian parents on 15 October 1920, in Rodosto, East Thrace, Turkey. In the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide when Achod was a little child his family fled to France and settled in Marseille. He later recounted his childhood experience in the novel Mayrig, which he dedicated to his mother and made into a 1991 film with the same name, which was followed by a sequel, 588 Rue Paradis, the following year.
Such outstanding actors as Fernandel, Louie De Funes, Anthony Queen, Zhan Gaben, Omar Shariff and Claudia Cardinale used to appear in the films, made by Henri Verneuil.
He was awarded the Saint Grigor the Enlightener Order by His Holiness Vazgen I, the Catholicos of All Armenians. He is the knight of National Order of the Legion of Honor and The Caesar of Honor, is elected the member of French Academy.
