Saint Nerses I the Great was an Armenian Catholicos (or Patriarch) who lived in the fourth century.
He spent his youth in Caesarea where he married Sanducht, a Mamikonian princess. After the death of his wife, he was appointed sword-bearer to King Arshak II. A few years later, having entered the ecclesiastical state, he was elected catholicos in 353. Having arguments with Arshak II, regarding the latter's policy of persecuting some of the Armenian ministerial dynasties, he resigned in 359.
In 364, upon the request of Arshak II, he returned to his see.
Saint Nerses I the Great is one of the most eminent patriarchs in the Armenian history that is why he bears the title of Great. According to the historical resources he takes his origin from the royal Gregorid Dynasty and is Husik Hayrapet’s grandson.
